Online Dating has become a prominent way of meeting people over the years. With its rise in popularity beginning in the mid 1990s, many people do not know that online dating actually began during the 1960s and 70s. During this time online dating did not consist of actual dating websites like Match.com, but instead people filled out surveys on punched cards and sent the offices. There the offices would put the answers into their database and the database would find potential partners. During the 90s, online websites began to form and at first they continued to have the original format. As time went by online dating sites changed from pairing people based off of personality to allowing people to search for potential partners based off of their interests. eHarmony is considered to be one of the only websites that still keeps the original 1960s survey style of matchmaking. This demonstrates that they survey style of matchmaking still remains a successful way of helping other people find significant others. As of 2008 eHarmony had over 10 million registered users. One of the most popular dating sites is Match.com. Created in 1994, it is difficult to assess if it was actually the first dating website, but it still remains one of the most successful with over 15 million registered users.
Questions for my professional:
Based on your research as to what people look for in a potential partner, do you think it is better to let a database create matches based off of personality or let people choose their own partners based off of interests?
Why is online dating becoming such a prominent way of meeting people?
How does it actually compare to physically taking a person out on a date and meeting the old fashioned way?
